Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcome of operative treatment of Achilles tendon rupture with allograft achilles tendon augmentation. From October 1999 to March 2003, ten operations on the Achilles tendon rupture with Achilles tendon allograft augmentation were carried out. Mean age was 33 years. 7 cases were male and 3 cases were female. Average follow-up periods was 3 years and 9 months, range from 2 years to 4 years and 5 months. After repair of the torn ends of tendon using a Kessler type stitch without debridement as minimal as possible, that was augmented by Achilles tendon allograft with rectangular or wrap around shape. ROM exercise and partial weight bearing were permitted postoperative 3 weeks under wearing reverse 90¡Æ ankle stop short leg brace. The mean active dorsiflexion was 0.4 degrees less on the operated side than on the normal side, and mean plantar flexion was 0.5 degrees. The mean calf atrophy was 0.3 cm less. Heel to floor distance was 0.2 cm less. The clinical results by Arner and Lindholm method was 7 excellent and 3 satisfactory. The complication was one case of superficial infection. Therefore, this may be the another augmented method for Achilles tendon rupture, because of permitting early ROM exercise and less complication.
